Some brands find they’re ticking all the right social media boxes and still not seeing results. Even if you are posting regularly to a carefully curated feed, you may find your content just isn’t doing what it’s supposed to.
Content that looks good but lacks strategy is one of the most common traps brands fall into – often leading to low impressions and engagement. The good news? With a few small tweaks, you can get your content back on track and actually start seeing results.
Here’s where things might be going wrong – and (importantly) how to fix it.
1. Problem: There’s no clear objective
Is what you post random at best and clutching at straws at worst? Every piece of content should serve a purpose – whether that’s to educate, entertain, inspire, or add value. If you’re posting without knowing why, chances are your audience probably won’t know what to do with it either.
Solution: Before you hit post, ask yourself what you want the content to achieve, who it’s for, and what action you want someone to take after seeing it. For example, you might create a reel about best brunch spots in Manchester with the purpose of adding value and showcasing your knowledge of the city. Once you’re clear on your goal, everything else (like messaging, visuals, tone) becomes much easier to align.
2. Problem: You’re talking to everyone (but reaching no one)
Whilst it may be tempting to try to appeal to everyone, generic content often gets ignored because it’s not resonating with anyone specific. Your audience needs to feel like you’re speaking directly to them, so you need to know who said audience is.
Solution: Creating audience personas can be a great way to visualise who you’re talking to. Define your ideal customer and tailor your content to their pain points, interests and behaviours. Create content with them, not you, in mind. This is something we cover in our brand workshops.
3. Problem: Your content looks good – but lacks substance
Aesthetics matter, of course. But if all your posts are just “nice to look at” without offering real value, most people will scroll past. Even though a beautiful Instagram grid used to be the way to go, changing algorithms and current trends mean that less polished, more authentic content is often preferred, hence the rise in UGC (user generated content).
Solution: Rather than solely promotional content or nice photos, try mixing in content that solves problems, answers questions or gives your audience an insight into the people behind the brand (for example, meet the team content). Try how-to guides, top tips, quick wins, or even just honest insight into your brand’s day-to-day. Most importantly, be real!
4. Problem: You’re not using video – or you’re using it poorly
Short-form video isn’t a trend – it’s now the standard, with the rise in Instagram reels and TikTok. The Instagram algorithm tends to prefer video content (video is even on the rise on platforms like LinkedIn), so if you’re still relying solely on static posts, you’re missing out on some serious reach. We tend to prefer carousels and video to static images and graphics, but video is king!
Solution: Embrace reels and TikToks with a strategy behind them. Focus on authenticity, storytelling and trends. It doesn’t have to be polished – just purposeful.
5. Problem: Inconsistency is letting you down
Posting sporadically or changing your tone and style every week can confuse your audience and break trust.
Solution: Plan your content in advance, develop a recognisable tone of voice and visual identity, and show up consistently – even if it’s just a couple of times a week. We carefully monitor best posting times, using our specialist social media tools, to optimise results.
You know a brand is nailing their socials when you can tell what brand has posted a video without even seeing the username. If you’re relying on tools like AI, you’re not injecting enough personality into your content.
6. Problem: You’re not reviewing your results
It goes without saying that if you’re not looking at what’s working (and what isn’t), you’ll keep repeating the same mistakes.
Solution: Check your insights regularly. Look for trends in performance – what type of content is driving the most engagement and reach? Learn from your social media analytics. We create in-depth monthly social media reports for our clients., ensuring full accountability
